The 2015 SA Slalom Championships Powered by the Dihlabeng Mall, was held at the fearsome Ash river slalom course just outside Bethlehem. I came into the event as the defending Champion and I was looking to make it a 5th successive title!
Continuing with a project I started at the u23 World Champs last year, I raced in K1 and C1. My C1 was infact a modified K1 which gives it some interesting properties! After a few days of training on the course, the racing began in Good Friday afternoon. The format was the usual, 2 heat runs followed by a semi-final and a final. My heat runs were really good apart from a impressive tailwalk at the bottom drop on my second run! Neverthe less, I finished 1st overall in the K1 and 7th overall in the C1. As with all National champs, the C1's and K1's fight it out for the overall title as well as their class titles.
The finals day was very cold and overcast which set the mood for some tense racing to come! My semi-final C1 run was really good and clean but my K1 run really set the bar high! I had a whopper of a run finishing the course in 81seconds raw time but clocked 8 seconds in penalties! Even with the penalties, the time was still 10 seconds faster than 2nd place! After this i had it all to lose in the final! My C1 final was right up there with my best runs and had it not been for a very suspect 50 second penalty it would have given me the C1 title and 3rd overall! That left the job for the K1. I had a pretty average run but managed to stay clean enough to take the win and achieve my 5th SA Slalom Title!
Moving forward to Rio qualification, it is a massive boost that I managed some really fast runs in both classes! Next up is the 1st World Cup in Prague, CZE!! Once again thanks to all my sponsors for all the support!
The preseason for me is always a mixture of Slalom and marathon events. The biggest event of them all was the Dusi Canoe Marathon. I had a really good first 15km but disaster stuck at the top of the first portage when I rolled my ankle, losing massive time! I finished the day way back in 163rd position but fought back over the next two days to finish 54th, just inches from the top 50! Thanks to Popescanoe Center for the full kevlar K1 Rio and to Prime HPI for all the recovery work to help me continue racing! My seconds were also amazing and helped me push through some massive pain barriers!
Other major event finishes were 4th in the UMKO marathon racing with Shaun Griffen and 12th at the Drak Challenge.
I have also had the opportunity to train at the Prime HPI High Altitude room and do some very thorough High performance testing! Thanks very much to the EADP program for allowing me to do this!
Nailing the last Upstream on my way to my 5th KZN Slalom title on the 28th of March on the Umkomaas river.
